Association of Directors of Adult Social Services

The Association of Directors of Adult Social Services (ADASS) represents all the directors of adult social services in England and Northern Ireland. It evolved from the former ADSS (Association of Directors of Social Services) when responsibilities for adults and children’s services within top tier local authorities were split between two new departments - the one for adults and the other for children.

Consumer Financial Education Body

The Consumer Financial Education Body (CFEB) was formed in April 2010 as a separate organisation to the Financial Services Authority. CFEB is responsible for helping consumers understand financial services in the UK and manage their finances better.

Money problems can worsen people's mental health and those with mental illness are more likely to experience financial problems and debt. Improving people's ability and understanding of their money matters can assist their recovery through improved psychological wellbeing, life satisfaction, and reduced risk of anxiety/depression. Improving Financial Capability improves mental wellbeing and reduces risk of anxiety/depression. CFEB has a free and impartial website (link below) and telephone service (0300 500 5000) to assist people with financial guidance. CFEB will be rolling out face to face Money Guides across the Country during 2010/11

Given the increase in people having individual budgets it may be helpful if
they have financial guidance. Specific work in mental health and financial capability is being developed with CFEB and this will be reported as the pilots develop. CFEB offer a wealth of information, resources and interactive tools to help people make informed decisions about money. There is no selling, no jargon, just the facts.

International Initiative in Mental Health Leadership (IIMHL)

The journey towards recovery focused, best practice mental health services is an international movement. National polices and directions can be enhanced by changes occurring in other countries. The role of a leader in maintaining awareness of all changes is a daunting task. It often leaves leaders without a network for personal support or organisational assistance to advance changes needed within the environment.

IIMHL offers support and technical assistance to countries and their provider leaders by assisting leaders in adapting to rapid changes in the field and providing a support network through partnership with other leaders from around the world. IIMHL identifies and shares the best in managerial and operational practices together with access to information about developments that are occurring in other countries. IIMHL provides member countries with a linkage to international leadership development that supplements their national policies and service developments with an emphasis on evidence-based practices.

  • Provide comfort to a person experiencing a mental health problem
  • Raise awareness of mental health issues in the community
  • Reduce stigma and discrimination

MHFA does not teach people to be therapists. However, it does teach people how to recognise the symptoms of mental health problems, how to provide initial help and how to guide a person towards appropriate professional help.

Patient Opinion was founded by Paul Hodgkin a GP in Sheffield who wanted to make the wisdom and insights of patients, available to the NHS. The old ways of doing this - inviting a patient to sit on a working party or carrying out a survey - did not work very well so he devised Patient Opinion as a way for thousands of patients to both share their own experience and gain support form others.

The initial phase of Patient Opinion was funded by the Department of Health and South Yorkshire Strategic Health Authority. Since 2006 Patient Opinion has been funded via subscriptiosn and sales to Trusts, PCTs and others.
