The Oxford Road Project
We are a community day service providing support & psycho-education for local mental health service users. Oxford Road Project is uniquely funded via the county council, local mental health Trust & MIND.
We have a comprehensive programme of courses & groups both on site and in the wider community all using the recovery and inclusion model.
Of particular interest in terms of ‘peer support' is our ‘Hearing Voices' group attended weekly by service users/voice hearers. These sessions provide people with the opportunity to explore their experiences and validate them in response to others within the group.
The evidence base underpinning this group session is the work carried out by Romme & Escher who believe that far from medicalising and labelling such experiences, voice hearers can gain valuable insights, reduction of stigma and a sense of inclusion through supporting each other.
What have been the benefits for individual service users (and others) accessing your project?
We have recently affiliated ourselves to the National Hearing Voices Network and feed back from attendees is positive in terms of their sense of supporting each other.
