RECAP Training

Guidance Note for Use - Free Materials  (May 2010)
Introduction
The Race Equality and Cultural Awareness Programme (RECAP) is freely available for download and use and adaptation by anyone in mental health and social care wishing to develop the capability of the workforce.  RECAP is a registered trademark belonging to the National Mental Health Development Unit (NMHDU).  This is just one of many training packages on race and culture in mental health available either freely or at a cost.  This creates choice and opportunities but not a mandate or requirement that these RECAP materials are the only ones to be used.

What is RECAP?
The materials themselves give a full explanation.  In short, RECAP is a development programme for people who wish to enhance their knowledge and skills so that they can competently deliver race equality and cultural awareness in the provision of mental health services.  The materials available here are best delivered by a trainer with both the following:-
·       technical skills in facilitation and training
·       depth in the subject matter, which was acquired through some form of study and not just personal experience.

How to use these materials

RECAP is designed as a ‘Train-the trainer' programme.  Anyone wishing to use the RECAP resources to train others would benefit from familiarising themselves fully with the RECAP.

The content of this package is set out below.  Anyone wishing to provide ‘Train the Trainer' training using RECAP would need to have expertise and competence in both the subject matter and also in the areas of training and facilitation.  People who are training other potential trainers will need to posses high levels of skill and will need to provide guidance on planning sessions.  It is important that people new to training are taught to plan in detail, with some background in understanding learning styles and group behaviours.

PowerPoint Slides
There are slides for each of the four sessions.  These are to provide a visual prompt during the training.  The slides are often detailed and serve well as an information resource to be provided to delegates.

Existing Expert Trainers
The Delivering Race Equality programme (latterly Mental Health Equalities Programme within NMHDU) trained and developed a team of individuals and assessed their competency to deliver the RECAP training.  Many of these highly skilled individuals still provide training and may be contacted via caroline@phoenixphilosophy.co.uk.
