Communications Toolkit

People from some cultures are less willing to admit they have a mental health problem and seek professional help than others. This is why the way in which you choose to communicate with your local community is so important.

A new communications toolkit to help you raise awareness of your work among BME communities, commissioners, internal media teams and external stakeholders is now available. The campaign pack includes information and advice on:

• Producing a communications plan
• Identifying audiences
• Setting up partnerships with key organisations and stakeholders
• Media work and event planning
• Setting budgets and timelines
• Updating other members of your organisation on your projects
• Evaluating your work

You can also download press releases that can be adapted locally and issued to the media. Each section of the pack can be downloaded separately below so you can access exactly what you need.

How To Guides

We also have produced a series of ‘How To’ guides to help you work more effectively with your local BME community. The first guide focuses on the pilot projects we ran in summer 2006, and offers practical tips & advice for running similar initiatives. The other three guides are:

• Developing a local communications plan

• Developing relationships with stakeholders

• Working with the media

We will be using the guides to support the series of campaign training workshops we have planned for Summer 2008, so look out for details from your Regional Equalities Lead. In addition, to help with your own media work we have produced some tips for selling in a story to the local press plus a list of useful national BME media contacts, please click on the relevant link below.

Some of you may be based at organisations with their own communications teams. Why not speak to them about getting a media relations plan of action together so that you can promote the work that you’re doing?
