Caring Memories

Submitted Practice and Innovations

Title of the innovative practice:

Caring Memories - Memory Book and Prompts

Aims of the service/innovative practice:

To allow users to make a physical Memory Book and associated prompts for ongoing reminiscence

What have been the challenges and solutions in setting up and maintaining the innovative practice?

Main challenge has been finding people who have the time to make the books using our software. It can be accessed online at www.caringmemories.net . One solution is voluntary organisations recruiting volunteers to make books for people.

Outcomes (including how this was measured, evaluated and lessons learned):

Early for evaluation. NHS Caring Memories project underway in Edinburgh. Many customers are benefitting from using the Book. Watch Mary's Story above or at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5JjCwoJLoXM

Plans for the future (eg sustainability):

Looking for funding to develop the product further

  • Anne Forrest (9th May 2010) I am very interested by your "main challenge" - could you elaborate on that please? Is it literally that you find it hard to find people to make up the books, or that finding the people to find the material is the challenge?

I have been trialling my idea of Musical Life Story Slideshow compilations to view on DVD, totally free of any charge whatsoever, at a large local Nursing Home where residents are not in a position to help construct these. Their relatives have been approached time and again, but the uptake over 5 months has been abysmally low despite those undertaken being great successes. Has anyone any idea why please?
